ObeliskOS ASA Bot troubleshooting

Most problems with a Discord bot come down to a handful of causes. Work through this page in order: it starts with what the creator already knows about, then the common problems for this kind of resource, then how to ask for help so you get an answer fast.

Before anything else

• Read the console or log from the moment the server starts (the server console and the API's log files). The first error is usually the real one; later errors are often knock-on effects.
• Confirm you are on the latest version (1.0.0).
• Try with only this resource and its requirements installed, to rule out a clash with something else.

Common problems

The bot stays offline

Check the token is correct and was not reset, and read the console where the bot runs; the first error usually names the problem.

Commands do not appear

Slash commands can take a while to register globally. Re-invite the bot with the applications.commands scope and check its role is allowed in the channel.

It cannot read messages or members

Enable the privileged intents it needs (Message Content, Server Members) in the Discord Developer Portal under Bot.

It cannot post, assign roles or manage channels

Move the bot's role above the roles it manages and give it the permissions listed by the creator.

Collecting a useful log

1. Restart the server so the log starts clean.
2. Reproduce the problem once.
3. Copy the log from the start of the server to just after the problem, without trimming the first error.
4. Remove secrets such as tokens, passwords and IP addresses before sharing it.

Performance problems

If the server slows down after installing, measure before and after: note CPU, memory and tick rate with your usual player count, then disable features one at a time in the config to find the expensive one.
