Setting up a Discord bot for ARK: Survival Ascended comes with its own vocabulary. These are the terms used across the ObeliskOS ASA Bot guides, explained in plain language. They are general definitions, not claims about ObeliskOS ASA Bot itself.
Terms covered: AsaApi (ServerAPI), Config file, Cluster, Bot token, Gateway intents, Slash command, Environment variables and Runtime.
Terms
AsaApi (ServerAPI)
The server API used to run plugins on ARK: Survival Ascended dedicated servers. Plugins live in their own folders under ShooterGame/Binaries/Win64/ArkApi/Plugins.
Config file
A text file the resource reads its settings from. Editing it changes behaviour without touching code; a backup before editing is your undo button.
Cluster
Several linked servers that share player transfers and sometimes data, common on ARK. Resources must support clusters to keep data consistent across them.
Bot token
The secret password a Discord bot logs in with. Anyone with it controls the bot, so never share it or commit it to a public repository.
Gateway intents
Switches in the Discord Developer Portal that decide which events a bot receives. Message Content and Server Members are privileged and must be enabled by hand.
Slash command
A Discord command started with /, registered by the bot and shown in Discord's command picker.
Environment variables
Settings passed to a program from outside its code, typically used for secrets like tokens and database passwords.
Runtime
The software a program runs on, such as Python, Node.js or .NET. The version matters: too old and the program will not start.
