EventCountdown troubleshooting

Most problems with a plugin come down to a handful of causes. Work through this page in order: it starts with what the creator already knows about, then the common problems for this kind of resource, then how to ask for help so you get an answer fast.

Before anything else

• Read the console or log from the moment the server starts (the server console and the API's log files). The first error is usually the real one; later errors are often knock-on effects.
• Confirm you are on the latest version (0.0.4).
• Try with only this resource and its requirements installed, to rule out a clash with something else.

For comparison, this is EventCountdown working as the creator intended.

Common problems

It does not load at all

Check the files are in the right folder (not one level too deep after extracting), that the framework or loader it needs is installed and up to date, and read the console from the moment the server starts.

It loads but nothing happens

Most resources ship disabled features or empty lists in their first config. Open the config it created, enable what you need and apply the change.

It stopped working after a game update

Game patches often break server mods until the framework and the resource are updated. Check for a newer release, then update the framework first and the resource second.

Players cannot use a command

Commands are usually gated by permissions. Grant the permission to the right group, and check no other plugin uses the same command name.

The config resets or will not save

A syntax error (a missing comma or quote in JSON, a tab in YAML) makes many loaders throw the file away and write defaults. Validate the file before saving and keep a backup.

Collecting a useful log

1. Restart the server so the log starts clean.
2. Reproduce the problem once.
3. Copy the log from the start of the server to just after the problem, without trimming the first error.
4. Remove secrets such as tokens, passwords and IP addresses before sharing it.

Performance problems

If the server slows down after installing, measure before and after: note CPU, memory and tick rate with your usual player count, then disable features one at a time in the config to find the expensive one.

Getting help

When you ask for help, include your version of EventCountdown, your ARK: Survival Ascended server setup (host, operating system), what you expected, what happened, and the exact error text.
